Every body needs to live in group. No one can live alone all his life, man does not live by bread alone. So it is good way to have a partner, who has same ideas, hobbies, and things in common.
And to get that, you need to know about this person very well because you will be with him until the end of your life. And you want this relatioship to be successful!
However, talking with this person, travelling with him, hanging out with him, spending more time with him is enough to know him if you are not independent financially. But if you are it will be a good idea to live together before you get married.
But the main thing to get across is to know about your partner before going any further .

I absolutely agree with you when you say that there is nothing wrong about people living together before they are married but I definitely think that young people should be independant financially and responsible for themselves before living with somebody else.
