Traditionally, Korea had a culture which made a strict distinction between men and women. The reason is that Korean culture was based on Confucianism which is quite conservative. Men go out and work, women stay home and keep house. Nowadays, it has changed a lot, however, there is still a stereotype about the role of men and women. For example, if we look at a typical Korean family, fathers are the head of a family. Fathers always make important decisions about the family, and they feel a responsibilty that they should take care of their wife and children and protect them. Also, they have a tendency to want their family to admire them. On the other hand, mothers tend to concentrate on supporting their husband and children. Of course, these days, many women in Korea have a job and work like men, but once they have a family, they give up everything. Traditionally, it was regarded as model of a wise mother and a good wife.
I think that Korean society is still run by men. Even though girls have outperformed boys in every kind of exam in school, they can not help facing sexual discrimination when they go out into society. One example is politics, it is often said that there should be no discrimination in the entry of women into politics, however, in reality there is a kind of invisible boundary blocking women into politics. It will take a long time, but I really hope Korean society will be able to change someday.
